How do bed bugs cause a problem?

Adult bed bugs are about 4-5mm long, wingless and normally a mahogany brown colour. Bed bugs can be a substantial nuisance to humans through their blood-feeding habit. They will feed on humans throughout the night when we are sleeping. If you have a high infestation there could be a risk of anaemia being suffered by the human hosts, although this is rare. However, when bitten by a bed bug it can cause itching which could progress onto a secondary infection. Humans are not the only hosts that can be attacked by bed bug. Bats, chickens and other domesticated animals are also at risk.

Bed bug infestations can be hard to detect. Bed bug eggs are tiny (around 1mm) and are normally laid in hidden areas. Bed bugs are often detected when they bite humans — appearing as red, raised humps on exposed skin such as the arms, face, neck or lower legs.
