Inside properties, the beetles will leave their eggs on or near wool carpets and rugs, woollen goods, animal skins, furs, stuffed animals, leather book bindings, feathers, animal horns, hair, silk, dried plant products and other material that could act as larval food. The adults usually make an appearance during the spring or in the early summer. Mature larval are slightly longer than the adults and are covered with dense tufts of hair.
Furniture carpet beetles are slightly larger and rounder than the varied carpet beetle. Colouration and markings vary, but this beetle generally has a mottled appearance.
Adult black carpet beetles range from 1/8 to 3/16 inches from top to bottom. They are shiny black and dark brown with brownish legs. Their fully grown larvae can be 5/16” long and are shiny, smooth, hard and white.
