How do cockroaches cause a problem?

There are two types of Cockroach in the UK, Oriental and German. They are distinguished by their very long antennae, flat oval bodies and their rapid jerky walk.

The German cockroach is a yellowy/brown colour and it can be up to 15mm long. The Oriental Cockroach is a browny/blacky colour 24mm in length.

Able to climb up smooth and rough surfaces and liking a damp warm atmosphere, kitchens, bathrooms, toilets and basements are favourite places for the cockroach. Cockroaches prefer to live in kitchens and other food preparation areas, so they can feed off food spills and have access to water. Hiding spots for the household cockroach include:

• cracks in walls
• confined spaces, such as behind the refrigerator, in a kitchen cupboard or underneath a stack of magazines, newspapers or cardboard boxes
• any furniture items that are generally left undisturbed
• kitchen larders, below sinks, in drains and grease traps.

Cockroaches eat a wide range of food, including decaying waste, and spread a number of diseases to humans including salmonella and gastroenteritis. Recent studies have indicated cockroaches can also cause allergies. Producing up to 1200 eggs in 12 months, once established cockroaches become a serious threat to health.

Signs of a cockroach infestation

• Unusual smell – An infestation of cockroaches can tend to produce a lingering and unpleasant odour.
• Cockroach droppings – If there is little water available their droppings will be cylindrical and a brown/black colour.
• Smear marks – They will produce brown and irregular shaped smear marks.
• Shedding skin – Cockroaches shed skin 5-8 times as they mature and these skins will be found near to where they are hiding.
