85% of people are scared of spiders. Although the odd spider may make you shudder, when their numbers increase inside a property or in an outside building they can cause a real problem to many people.
With a leg span of up to 6 cm and the capability to run extremely quickly, they are not the easiest of pests to ‘track’ as they simply ‘appear’ where you don’t want them to.
Of course there are a large number of different species but the house spider is one of the largest and the most common that we encounter. House spiders are large-bodied, hairy spiders with a body length of approximately 1 cm and the leg span can be as much as 5-6 cm in length. The colouration of their bodies is speckled brown with a striped appearance to the main body region. The female spider is typically larger than the male spiders.
They also have venom sacs, and can impart a venomous bite on a human.
A false black widow spider causes panic when people think they may have them in their property. They have a brown bulbous abdomen with cream coloured markings which are often the shape of a skull and reddish-orange legs. The females can be up to 14 mm long whilst the males are slightly smaller. They have been described as the most venomous spider in the UK but bites from them are rare as they are not aggressive and only bite to defend themselves. Bites can cause severe swelling, discomfort, numbness, burning sensations or chest pains. To put the bite of a false black widow into perspective, it is no more unpleasant than a wasp sting and you are far more likely to be stung by a wasp than the spider.
The most likely places you will find the false black widow is in your property, conservatory, garage or shed. They are also found in public toilets. They like a warm atmosphere with plenty of dark hiding places.
