The red fox measures up to 110 cm from head to tail and can be anything up to 40 cm from the foot to the shoulder. Weighing around 6.5 kg with a reddish/brown coat it usually has a white tail tip and many have a white strip on their throat.
The fox tends to be a semi-solitary animal, but family groups of a male and several females are also common. Their mating season is from December to February when their barking and screaming mating calls can be heard. The cubs (average litter size is five) are usually born between March and May.
The lifespan of a fox is around 9 years, however death rates are up to 80% in the first year alone. In some populations, few survive more than three years.
