Why do rabbits and hares cause a problem?

They are regarded an agricultural pest with as little as 7 rabbits eating as much grass as one ewe. Their burrowing, scrapes and prolific appetite have been known to result in agricultural land becoming useless.

With litters of up to 12, a rabbit reaches sexual maturity at four months and can have up to five litters each year.  The well-known phrase ‘breeding like rabbits’ is true! A rabbit colony can explode in the summer months and with their capability of burrowing under fences, once established the damage they can cause can be catastrophic to both the householder and farmer alike.
