Rat problem in Dorset or Somerset

Classed as the most feared of pests (with fleas, wasps, spiders and snakes a close second), rodents (rats and mice) carry an alarming number of diseases such as tuberculosis, salmonella, gastro-enteritis and numerous others, all of which have serious health implications. Their droppings and fur will also contaminate food preparation surfaces and foodstuffs. Rats are incontinent and consequently foul wherever they travel.

The most common rat in the UK is the brown rat which can measure up to 51 cms (20 inches) from nose to tail.

Breeding very quickly (one female rat can produce 170 offspring every year), rats gnaw constantly because their teeth continuously grow. They are capable of serious damage to electrical wiring, pipework, wood and plastic and have caused fires and expensive repair bills.

There are many clues, including:

  • Droppings – rat droppings are blunt and spindle-shaped measuring up to 20 millimeters. (Mice droppings are rod-shaped and up to 6 millimeters long).
  • Nesting material — small pieces of chewed paper and plastic are often found at the base of drawer units, service cupboards and store rooms.
  • Smell – a musty smell similar to a damp unventilated area or wet straw.
  • Noises – squeaks, rustling and scampering sounds as they make their way around( Usually at night).
  • Damaged or spoilt food –  There is very little rats won’t eat. They will munch through meat, fish, vegetables, weeds, earthworms, crustaceans, nuts, fruit and more.
